The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great instrument for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of the juries. In the course of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
